Padiglione Zero

Pavilion Zero is the first building of the Exposition Site you bumps into from the West entries and, for this reason, it has a strong representative role. With an area of 7,500 square meters, it enhance over a rectangular plan of 124×60 meters and reaches a maximum height of 26 meters. The complex will house ten conceptual areas introducing the visitor to the central theme of EXPO 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. From the point of view of composition, the hall is characterized by the repetition and the intersection of eight cones with a base diameter of 85 and 45 meters and a height of 26 and 22 meters. These elements are arranged around a bare patio and the perimetral wall dissects geometries and highlights the reliefs. The wavy roofing, similar to a succession of hillscapes, is covered in fir slats, resting upon steel bearing structures and horizontally arranged to follow the contour lines.
Each hill is supported by galvanized steel trusses, radially arranged, made with rolled profiles, variable in size depending on the span and loads. The columns are also in hot galvanized steel, in circular hollow sections, supporting the trusses roofing. Since this is a temporary structure, designed to be dismantled, the choice of steel, recyclable material par excellence, is also far-sighted to reduce environmental impact and reuse after the exposition.
